The best roller coasters in the Netherlands, ranked by thrill
TL;DR: Achtbaan’s catalogue has six Dutch roller coasters, two in each of three parks. At Walibi Holland, Goliath and Untamed share the highest thrill score in the country, 34 out of 100. Toverland follows with Fenix (33) and Troy (30), and Efteling has Baron 1898 (25) and Joris en de Draak (22). None of them is a record breaker; together they cover almost every kind of coaster.
Achtbaan is Dutch for roller coaster, so it is fair to ask how the Netherlands does. The honest answer: no Dutch coaster comes near the world’s tallest or fastest, but the country packs a wide range of ride types into three parks. This guide ranks the Dutch coasters in Achtbaan’s catalogue, explains what makes each one worth riding, and shows how to plan a visit with the ride log.
The Dutch coasters on Achtbaan, ranked
The thrill score is Achtbaan’s 0 to 100 measure built from top speed, height, inversions and track length; the rank is each coaster’s place among the 101 operating coasters in the catalogue.
| Coaster | Park | Type | Height | Top speed | Inversions | Thrill | Rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goliath | Walibi Holland | Steel | 46 m | 106 km/h | 0 | 34 | #56 |
| Untamed | Walibi Holland | Hybrid | 36 m | 95 km/h | 4 | 34 | #57 |
| Fenix | Toverland | Steel | 40 m | 100 km/h | 3 | 33 | #60 |
| Troy | Toverland | Wood | 32 m | 105 km/h | 0 | 30 | #72 |
| Baron 1898 | Efteling | Steel | 38 m | 90 km/h | 0 | 25 | #88 |
| Joris en de Draak | Efteling | Wood | 25 m | 75 km/h | 0 | 22 | #96 |
The catalogue covers the notable coasters of each country, not every family ride, so smaller Dutch coasters are not listed. If one you love is missing, you can suggest it.
Walibi Holland: the highest scores
Walibi Holland, in Biddinghuizen in Flevoland, has the two highest-scoring coasters in the country. Goliath, an Intamin steel coaster from 2002, is the tallest and fastest Dutch coaster in the catalogue at 46 metres and 106 km/h, and it does it without a single inversion: its 1,214 metres of track are built around airtime hills. Untamed scores the same 34 in a completely different way. Opened in 2019 as the Netherlands’ first Rocky Mountain Construction hybrid, it has a beyond-vertical drop, a stall and four inversions, the most of any Dutch coaster on Achtbaan.
Toverland: a wing coaster and a top wooden coaster
Toverland, in Sevenum in Limburg, comes next. Fenix is a Bolliger & Mabillard wing coaster from 2018, with seats hanging out on both sides of the track, a vertical loop and three inversions in all; at 40 metres and 100 km/h it scores 33. Troy, a GCI wooden coaster from 2007, scores 30 and is often named among Europe’s best wooden coasters. Its 105 km/h top speed is close to Goliath’s, but on a wooden track the speed feels very different.
Efteling: themed rides first
Efteling, in Kaatsheuvel in North Brabant, scores lowest on the numbers and highest on atmosphere. Baron 1898 is a B&M dive coaster from 2015 that holds the train over the edge before dropping it into a mist-filled mine shaft; its track is only 488 metres long, which keeps its score at 25. Joris en de Draak is a duelling GCI wooden coaster from 2010 in which two trains, Water and Fire, race side by side; at 25 metres and 75 km/h it is the gentlest of the six, and a good first wooden coaster.
What the numbers miss
A thrill score of 34 would not crack the world top 50, but the score only measures size and speed. It does not measure theming, which is where Efteling’s rides stand out, or the kind of force a ride gives you: Goliath and Troy deliver airtime, Untamed and Fenix deliver inversions. Our guide to airtime explains the difference, and what makes a roller coaster thrilling explains how to read the stats together.
Riding all six
Efteling and Toverland are both in the south of the country, in North Brabant and Limburg, while Walibi Holland lies in Flevoland, east of Amsterdam. The two southern parks are the easier pair to combine on one trip. Log each coaster as you ride it and the ride log’s park planner shows which park still has the most coasters you have not ridden; you can also log a whole park visit at once. If you are combining the Netherlands with Belgium and Germany, our guide to planning a roller coaster trip in Europe covers the nearby parks.
And if a day of coasters leaves you wanting a quieter one, OasePark, a sister site in the Website Holding network, maps the Netherlands’ parks and green escapes.
